About swimming and human hair wigs, including ours.

by Admin, 12th December 2016

We are often asked about swimming in Joli Cameleon European hair wigs.  The short answer is that we do not recommend swimming in any human hair wigs, including ours.  But many of our hair wearers, like Franchesca, our own Joli Dancer model, do it anyway.  Because life is like that.  Here is our full response to an Alopecian woman we shall call “Suzanni”

Hi Suzanni.

Thank you for contacting us.  At Joli Cameleon our mantra is #AdaptBeautifully.  We had beautiful, active women, just like you, clearly in mind when we created our hair collections for Alopecians and for women with thinning hair.  I would like to recommend to you our Joli Dancer™, the best high-activity performer available.  Even for intense activities, no tape, no glue is needed. It is super comfortable, very lightweight and all hand tied.  Also great for updo’s and ponytails. More general information included below, as well as the answer to your specific question concerning “Swimming”.  If you would like to see and try a Joli Dancer, please let us know where you are located and we will try to make that happen for you.

Here is an Op Ed from our technical director: SWIMMING IN A HUMAN HAIR WIG.

Our official response is that we do not recommend any human hair wigs for swimming.  The reason is that real hair is 4x heavier than synthetic hair and, unlike synthetic hair, it becomes saturated with the water it is in contact with.   Other issues are that Chlorine tends to turn hair color to greenish tones and also dries it out.  Salt water also dries human hair and, if not washed out, can leave salt deposits making the hair brittle.  If you are choosing a real hair wig, especially a high quality European hair wig like one of ours, we recommend also having a similar looking color/length synthetic wig just for swimming.

That besides, if life does takes you and your Joli Dancer in the water, Franchesca explains her experiences below.

From Franchesca, our own Joli Dancer professional dancer/model:  “Swimming in your Joli Dancer ?

We know life happens, so our very own Joli Dancer model, Franchesca, a professional dancer, has been wearing her Joli Dancer hair creation when playing around in the pool this summer.  She has her own techniques for making that work – DESCRIBED BELOW.  Franchesca can be reached on Facebook:  TheJoliDancer.

The Joli Dancer is secure for many activities but we never talk about swimming.  Joli Cameleon’s official stance is not to go swimming in any human hair wig, including theirs.  But sometimes I just can’t help myself, I want to be in the water with no advance planning, LOL.   If you love to be by the pool with friends but are nervous about your wig…the Joli dancer is the perfect wig for you! I, Franchesca Bass, have done some tests myself to see what the Joli Dancer can handle. Although I do not recommend intense swimming, going under water can be just fine. Follow these steps and you will be worry free.

  1. Tie your hair up in a high tight bun.
  2. Put on a headband for extra security and more natural look.
  3. Get in the water, but do not dive! (Be gentle while swimming)
  4. Make sure you wash your hair thoroughly and shortly after you are finished with the water

It is as simple as that! Although you may not be able to go crazy and have underwater speed races, you can still get in the water with no worry and feel more comfortable around your friends.

JOLI CAMELEON ALERT:  This personal Franchesca

(unsanctioned) advice applies to a swimming pool.   In the ocean, the currents and strong waves can pull off any wig, however good, if the water catches you the wrong way.  And you could lose your wig.

A MESSAGE FOR THE Joli Dancer™ HAIR WEARER.

The Joli Dancer™ 30 minutes test.

The Joli Dancer™ does not feel like any other wig you might have tried on.  The hair is beautiful European Standard™™ Eurasian human hair.   It is extremely light, all hand tied and the specially sourced US-made silicone grips very effectively.  The French top hides the knots and looks like hair growing from a natural scalp.  The lace front allows for a natural hairline.  The design of the Joli Dancer allows for updo’s and ponytails.  You can wear your Joli Dancer during high-energy activity, such as dancing, martial arts and working out.  We have professional dancers wearing their Joli Dancer during performances and on camera.  At first, it will feel unfamiliar to you.  But wear it for 30 minutes and, as you become used to this new sensation, we think you will be surprised by how comfortable, light and secure your Joli Dancer feels on you.  This all hand-tied, French top, lace front Joli Dancer costs about half the price of the leading machine back wig for Alopecians (that doesn’t have a French top as standard).

Joli Dancer™ Hair Care.

Please remember your Joli Dancer™ is not unbreakable.  It is an advanced design, all hand-tied, thin and very lightweight, French top, lace front, full head, human hair cranial prosthesis.  At Joli Caméléon™ we call it a “hair creation”.  Each one is created by hand.  You need to learn from your Professional Hair Studio Consultant how to correctly put on and take off your Joli Dancer.  That is when damage can occur if not done correctly.  Always follow the advice of your Professional Studio Consultant.  They will also explain to you the need for regular maintenance, especially if wearing your hair during regular high-energy activity.  Perspiration has a heavy salt content, and there are few things worse for your hair than a build up of salt and residue.  Also, do not use oil based grooming products, or let any slick products near the roots of your hair.  Your hair is all hand-sewn and individually knotted.  If you get oil or slick conditioners in the knotted area, it can loosen the knots and cause premature wear.  Always use gentle shampoos and conditioners, without parabens and sulphates.  Do not use volumizing shampoos.  VERY IMPORTANT:  we have tested many products from other companies and believe that our specially sourced US made silicone, that makes your Joli Dancer™ perform better than anything else available, needs to be kept clean and free from sweat and creams to keep performing at its best.   This is easy to do.  Just use a warm, very slightly soapy washcloth and wipe down the silicone areas, remove the soap and dry them with a paper towel.  We recommend at least twice a day, or as needed.  Do not let anyone other than a Joli Caméléon™ certified hair professional color your Joli Dancer.  Chemicals in hair dyes and peroxide can damage it.
